Helping New Hampshire schools save energy and money

The New Hampshire EnergySmart Schools program is supporting K-12 public and private schools across the state pursue energy efficiency initiatives to control energy use and save money. [See list of participating school districts] The program utilizes an energy benchmarking system designed to help you:
  • Understand the energy consumption and cost trends at each of your school buildings;
  • Learn how your buildings are performing compared to other schools locally and nationally;
  • Identify opportunities for improving operations and reducing costs; and
  • Take advantage of resources to implement efficiency improvements and save money.
As a new school year gets underway amidst continued times of economic uncertainty, I encourage all schools across the State to participate in the New Hampshire EnergySmart Schools program and learn how they can save energy and money.
      —Ed Murdough, New Hampshire Department of Education

How do you compare?

Benchmarking is your first step to understanding and reducing energy consumption. Schools that have participated in energy benchmarking programs have demonstrated an approximate 20 percent decrease in overall energy use.

To date, 62 New Hampshire schools have been benchmarked through the EnergySmart Schools program.

This represents:

  • 20 school districts
  • 18,334 students
  • 3,532,051 square feet
  • 21,064,024 kWh of annual electric consumption
  • 172,000 MMBTU of annual heating consumption
  • $6,061,143 of total annual utility costs
